THE CHALLENGE

Units #7 & 8 at the Ulaanbaatar power plant UB#4 have been added in recent years and feature a separate discharge line to dispose their bottom ash to an ash pond. Their existing screw-type wet bottom ash handling system suffered serious reliability problems, sometimes forcing the power plant to shutdown the boilers. In 2012 and 2013, the Mongolia Government decided to retrofit those wet bottom ash handling systems with the dry MAC® (Magaldi Ash Cooler) technology.

 

THE CUSTOMER

State-owned Thermal Power Plant #4 in Ulaanbaatar is the biggest power station in Mongolia. It consists of 3x100 MW steam turbine generator units (#2, 3 &4) and 3x80 MW steam turbine generator units (#1,5 &6). The steam turbine generator units are connected to 8 boilers through a common main steam header.
The first steam turbine generator unit was commissioned in 1983 and the last one in 1991.The current combined maximum continuous rating of all the eight steam turbine generator units is 540 MW.

 

THE SOLUTION

The solution proposed by Magaldi for the dry revamping of the bottom ash handling systems provides the presence of a common bottom ash silo for both Unit #7 and Unit #8. The bottom ash is removed by the dry MAC® system and conveyed to a common storage silo by means of a pneumatic conveying vacuum system. The system also receives the fly ash from the primary air ducts, collected by means of 4 hoppers and pneumatically sent to the common bottom ash silo. The extreme reliability of the MAC® extractors solved the heavy dependability problems the Units were undergoing due to the failures of the old wet screw-type bottom ash systems and increased the overall efficiency of the boilers by recovering a considerable amount of heat from the bottom ash, which was previously lost in water.
