THE CHALLENGE

Plzeň is a peaceful town located in a green, hilly area in west Bohemia, Czech Republic. A Heat and Power Station, Plzeňská Teplárenská, is located In the industrial area which in recent years has been subject to radical reconstruction to improve the efficiency of the production and at the same time raise the quality of the environment, with a drastic reduction of gas and liquid emissions. One of the steps of this renewed course was the revamping of the coal boiler with modern equipment capable of guaranteeing more efficient methods of generating heat and electrical power. In particular, the main step taken by the Power Station was the decision to eliminate the water as process fluid in the extraction and cooling of bottom ash from Unit k5.
This unit was also subject to other important retrofit jobs in order to test a possible co-firing of refuse derived fuel (RDF) with coal. The elimination of water for the bottom ash extraction and cooling was possible thanks to the installation of the MAC® system, the dry bottom ash system designed and manufactured by Magaldi Power.
The main contract for the reconstruction of the boiler was awarded by Plzeňská Teplárenská to Alstom s.r.o., Alstom Group, based in Brno. The contract for the supply of the MAC® (Magaldi Ash Cooler) dry bottom ash system was issued to Magaldi Power in November 2009; the installation of this new unit took place during the summer of 2010, starting operations in the following autumn.

 

THE CUSTOMER

Plzeňská teplárenská, a.s. operates throughout nearly the whole Plzeň and supplies heat to dozens of industrial, administrative, commercial, educational, health care, cultural and sports buildings.
It also significantly participates in heating more than 40 000 municipal, cooperative and private flats.
Electrical energy is produced on state-of-the-art equipment for combined production of electric and thermal energy.
In addition, since April 2010 Plzeňská Teplárenská has been operating a new "green" production block with the K7 boiler for biomass. The new block can supply 10.3 MW electric power or up to 15MW thermal power. Currently, up to 90 000 tons of biomass are burnt annually, thanks to which the Company makes almost one fifth of the electricity from recoverable sources.

 

THE SOLUTION

The hot ashes, falling from a boiler having a steam production of 185 t/h@136.3 barg and 540°C, is conveyed at a rate of approx. 1 t/h and cooled down by the MAC® extractor.
After a first crushing stage, the bottom ash is then milled by a secondary crusher and finally conveyed to the existing fly ash silo by means of positive pressure pneumatic conveying system.
