STEEL BELT CONVEYORS FOR SEVERE CONDITIONS since 1929

MILLMERRAN OPERATING COMPANY

THE CHALLENGE

Magaldi Power Pty. Ltd.., the subsidiary of Magaldi Power S.p.A. in Australia, was contracted to replace the existing Submerged Scraper Chain Conveyor (SSCC) with the MAC® (Magaldi Ash Cooler).
Magaldi Power S.p.A. was involved in the engineering and manufacturing of the core equipment, while Magaldi Power Pty. Ltd. carried out the civil and structural engineering design, the electrical and control system design and the erection of the whole plant, including commissioning.
The works for Unit #1 started in 2008 and the erection of the equipment was completed in only 21 net days. Unit #2 was converted after 12 months, within the same time frame.

THE CUSTOMER

Millmerran Operating Company Pty. Ltd.. is owned by Intergen and directly employs about 50 people and indirectly more than 150 people, including coal mine employees and other sub-contractors. Millmerran Power Station with a total installed power of 850 MW is located in the Darling Downs region in southern Queensland (Australia). Among the most energy efficient and environmentally advanced coal-fired projects in Australia, the power station became fully operational in early 2003.
Millmerran Power Station delivers electricity to about 1.1 million homes through the National Electricity Market (NEM), where it is one of the lowest cost generators. Coal for the power station comes from the adjacent open-cut Commodore mine, which not only helps to  reduce consumer electricity costs, but also creates minimal environmental impact on the surrounding land.

THE SOLUTION

The SSCC was replaced by the MAC® system and fitted with hydraulically-operated bottom doors. The bottom ash is transported via a crushing stage and a 140-metre-long Postcooler conveyor to a 430 m3 silo (included in Magaldi’s scope of supply). The economiser grits are also discharged in the MAC® system and conveyed to the final storage silo.
The installation of the MAC® system eliminated the use of water, which is a critical resource in Queensland, contributed to a cleaner environment and reduced the amount of maintenance required by the old wet SSCC.
The working area, which was previously congested due to the removal of the ash by trucks, is now clean and safe: the MAC® system is considered to be a significant benefit by Millmerran Operating Company staff.
