THE CHALLENGE

Traditionally, all Russian power plants have used wet ash handling systems, with the wet bottom ash waste being conveyed to an ash dump for storage thus creating problems of overfilled ash dumps and the potential for environment damage. These concerns led E.ON Russia to employ the state-of-the-art technology for dry ash handling on the new Unit #3 representing a significant milestone in Russian power generation. Magaldi Power S.p.A. designed, manufactured and commissioned the new bottom ash handling system.
The first order for the supply of the first dry bottom ash removal system in the Russian Federation represents another sign of confidence in Magaldi Power S.p.A.’s competence and immense experience gained from more than 190 installations wordwide. It is in places like Siberia, where the extreme winter weather conditions puts the production assets under a great pressure, that the introduction of the Magaldi dry bottom ash technologies will provide advantages to the higher extent. Thanks to the dry MAC® (Magaldi Ash Cooler) bottom ash system, Berezovskaya GRES power plant has been allowed to provide electricity and heat to its customers without having to face any risk of ice formation in the bottom ash handling system.

 

THE CUSTOMER

Berezovskaya GRES is one of the largest coal-fired power plants in Siberia, owned by E.ON Russia. Constructed in the 70’s, the original Soviet project envisaged the construction of eight power units of 800 MW capacity each. However, only two boilers were ever built and went into operation in the late 80’s. The third power unit was manufactured and delivered to site in early the 90’s but it was put in operation only in 2015. The new unit has been equipped with the Magaldi dry bottom ash handling system.
In 2005 OGK-4, an electricity supplier in Russia, was established on the basis of five power plants, it was composed of power plants with capacity of 8,630 MW: Surgutskaya GRES-2, Berezovskaya GRES, Shaturskaya GRES, Smolenskaya GRES and Yaivinskaya GRES.
In 2007, the majority interest of OGK-4 was acquired by the international E.ON Group, which has its business in more than 30 Countries in the world. The main activity of the Group is generation and supply of electric power, gas production and transportation. E.ON Group and Russia are interconnected by more than 38 years of partnership. E.ON is a shareholder of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, it also has a share in the South Russian oil and gas field.
Currently, E.ON is the largest foreign investor in the Russian electric power industry.

 

THE SOLUTION

The MAC® system for Berezovskaya Unit #3 will incorporate the  Magaldi Superbelt® technology based on a damage-tolerant air-cooled steel belt. Bottom ash will be conveyed by a bucket elevator and transferred to a milling station where two hammer mills will reduce the grain sized ash down to a particle size suitable for pneumatic transportation. The bottom ash will then be mixed with dry fly ash from the electrostatic precipitators and conveyed to its final destination.
