THE CHALLENGE

The lead sinter is a toxic, abrasive and hot material. Reliability is the main feature of any equipment designed to operate in a sinter plant, where a forced outage might result to be extremely costly in terms of loss of production and hence loss of profit.
In the 90’s, the Client Xstrata had installed a Magaldi Superbelt® conveyor in their Mount Isa Mines lead smelter plant.
In 2013, after more than 20 years of continuous operation, Xstrata confirmed its trust in Magaldi’s dependable technologies replacing the existing Superbelt® conveyor with a “dust-tight” Ecobelt® conveyor.

 

THE CUSTOMER

Xstrata plc is an Anglo-Swiss multinational mining Company, headquartered in Zug (Switzerland) and with its registered office in London (UK). It is a major producer of coal, lead, copper, nickel, primary vanadium and zinc and the world's largest producer of ferrochrome. It operates in 19 Countries across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.
In May 2013 ownership of Xstrata was fully acquired by Glencore.

 

THE SOLUTION

In the 90’s, Xstrata decided to install a Magaldi Superbelt® conveyor, 11m long and 0.80 m wide, in their Mount Isa Mines lead smelter plant to convey hot lead sinter to a wet mixer. This equipment performed the blending of lead sinter with lead slurry concentrate and other raw materials before feeding the lead furnace.
The Superbelt® conveyor had been in service for over 20 years, ensuring reliable and continuous handling of about 100 t/h of hot sinter with high Client satisfaction.
Nevertheless, the Client and Magaldi met in the Mount Isa Mines and identified the following areas of further improvement:

A solution based on the installation of the Magaldi Ecobelt® conveyor, equipped with the O-Chain, was investigated and found to be the most suitable solution for the above mentioned Client’s request for improvements, keeping all the unique benefits (above all reliability) of the Superbelt® technology.
