EP PRODUZIONE

THE CHALLENGE

EP Produzione S.p.A. is a subsidiary of Energetický a Průmyslový (EP) Energy a.s., which is a leading Central European energy group.
EP Produzione owns the Fiume Santo power plant, where Units #3 & 4 (2x320 MW PCF boilers) co-fire biomass with coal up to 5% of the thermal input each.
Biomass co-firing is an efficient and effective solution by which to meet the “green” energy demand and to reduce both the coal consumption and the greenhouse gas emissions. In October 2011, Magaldi was awarded to supply a biomass preparation system to handle, pulverize and inject biomass into the PCF boilers.

THE CUSTOMER

EP Energy group includes companies operating in heat and power distribution and supply, coal trading, renewables and other areas of the energy sector.
In 2015, EP Energy acquired some gas and coal generation assets in Italy, including the Fiume Santo power plant that is one of the most important Italian coal based power plants. The plant is located in the north western part of Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It has 2x320 MW coal-fired boilers, commissioned at the beginning of the ‘90s, that can also co-fire local and imported biomass as wood chips, wood pellets, palm kernel shells.

THE SOLUTION

In 2011, Magaldi Power supplied a biomass preparation system at the Fiume Santo power plant to co-fire biomass with coal on the 2x320 MW PCF boilers. The facility can handle, store, mill and directly inject the biomass into the combustion chambers, providing up to 5% of the total thermal input to each boiler.
The biomass preparation system is comprised of:
