THE CHALLENGE

In October 1999, a Spanish Client awarded Magaldi a contract for the design, supply and installation of two patented Magaldi Ecobelt® WA conveyors for a new incineration plant located in Meirama close to A Coruna.
The project challenge was to handle the dry bottom ash produced by the incineration of RDF (refuse derived fuel) in two greenfield FBC (fluidized bed combustion) boilers.Each furnace has the capacity to burn more than 23t/h of RDF and to produce 100 t/h of steam; in total, about 500,000 tons per year of waste can be incinerated in the Sogama complex.
The high pressure super heated steam produced by the two furnaces feeds a single turbo generator with a capacity of 49 electrical MW.

 

THE CUSTOMER

Sogama, the Galician Society for the Environment - Sociedade Galega do Medio Ambiente, is a public-private company established in 1992, which provides waste management and treatment services to the majority of the Galician municipalities.
It is owned by the Government of Galicia, which is the majority stakeholder (51%), and by an industrial partner, SocioTecnolóxico, linked to Grupo Gas Natural Fenosa, a Spanish-based energy company (49%). Sogama is based in the town of Cerceda (almost half way between A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela), where most of its infrastructure is located.
Since its foundation, Sogama was conceived as an operational body of the Galician regional administration, aimed at providing a long-term solution to the municipal waste management of the region. Sogama’s activity is focused on the management of solid waste from the moment it is deposited at the transfer stations, to its subsequent transport, treatment and valorisation activities or landfill disposal.

 

THE SOLUTION

In 1999, Magaldi was awarded by UTE O&M Sogama with a contract for the supply of two Ecobelt® WA conveyors to handle the dry bottom ash produced by the incineration of RDF (refuse derived fuel) in two greenfield FBC (fluidized bed combustion) boilers.
Each FBC boiler is provided with two drain pipes, that discharge the waste bottom ash onto the Ecobelt® WA conveyors (line “A” and line “B”). Moreover, the same conveyors receive the fine ash collected in the boiler back pass. In normal operation only one conveying line is running and collects the ash produced by both boilers, while the other line is 100% in stand-by. Both Ecobelt® WA conveyors are placed below ground level and convey the bottom ash outside the boiler building into open-top containers for further treatment and land filling.
