STEEL BELT CONVEYORS FOR SEVERE CONDITIONS since 1929

LOGAN

THE CHALLENGE

In 2016, Logan Aluminum Inc. awarded Magaldi a contract for the turn-key supply and installation of a complete Hot Shred Conveyance System for its new Recycling Center located in Russelville, Kentucky.
In the past, hot shreds were usually handled by traditional Apron-based conveyors enclosed in casings, not able to avoid heat dispersion. Moreover, directly exposed to high temperatures and dusty material, bushings and chain links needed frequent greasing to avoid excessive wear.
Logan was looking for a different technology able to improve all aspects related to safety, reliability, process capability and spare parts demand.

THE CUSTOMER

Jointly owned by Tri Arrows Aluminum Corp. and Novelis Corp., Logan Aluminum Inc. is a leading manufacturer of flat rolled aluminum sheet, primarily for use in the beverage can market.
The plant in Russelville is an aluminum recycling facility equipped with modern high speed technologies in the operational areas of ingot casting, hot and cold rolling and finishing.

THE SOLUTION

In September 2016, Logan got in contact with Magaldi to find a reliable solution to convey hot aluminum shreds from can production lines with a continuous total production of 40 t/h.
After simulating the operational conditions of the aluminum recycling plant so to better customize its well-proven capabilities in bulk material handling, Magaldi supplied its Ecobelt® technology to handle the hot shredded recycled aluminum from the rotary de-coaters to the melting furnaces, in the most reliable and simplest way while ensuring the lowest temperature drop.
The Ecobelt® is a steel belt conveyor able to handle hot materials with aggressive chemicals, heavy or sharp products, ensuring a safe and environmentally friendly operation. Furthermore, being completely enclosed in a steel casing, the Ecobelt® system guarantees the lowest temperature drop, allowing to re-use thermal energy released from upstream processes.
