THE CHALLENGE

In the new foundry in China, the customer produces big castings with a molding line using chemical sand. Hot sand is separated from the castings through a large vibrating shake-out (3 m x 3 m). 
Bradken was looking for a dependable equipment to convey hot sand, able to work in heavy conditions, with minimum maintenance requirements, also due to the very tight installation area.

 

THE CUSTOMER

Bradken Ltd. is a prestigious supplier of castings for mining industry. It specializes in wear resistant castings for digging, excavators, dumper spoons and teeth. Bradken also offers engineering and machining services.

 

THE SOLUTION

Traditional methods to convey hot sand after the shake-out include rubber belt conveyors or coolers/classifiers with associated pneumatic conveying system. However, such traditional systems suffer from high temperature problems, wear issues, difficult operation due to inhomogeneous materials and sharp/hard particles, involving frequent maintenance interventions and high O&M costs.
Magaldi proposed to install a Magaldi Ecobelt® conveyor that ensures safe, continuous, reliable operation, thanks to its unique damage-tolerant design. Moreover, the conveyor is completely enclosed in an air-tight casing in order to avoid any dispersion of fines in the environment.
Two big vibrating tables are used for sand separation. Each table discharges about 40 t/h of sand. Just underneath the two shake-out, the Magaldi Ecobelt® conveyor, equipped with the automatic sand recovery system Magaldi O-Chain®, conveys hot sand at a 60 t/h rate, 24 h/day. Peaks up to 80 t/h are present. The material is handled by the Magaldi Superbelt® conveyor at a temperature of 400 °C to the downstream cooling system.
