THE CHALLENGE

RWE Power AG (the End User) is Germany’s biggest power producer, playing a leading role in the extraction of energy raw materials. RWE relies on a diversified primary energy mix of lignite and hard coal, nuclear power, gas and renewable sources to produce electricity in the base, intermediate and peak load ranges. RWE invested a lot in the construction of two new hard coal fired Units at the existing power plant location Hamm, Westfalen in Germany.
The new units are the most modern plants of their kind worldwide and reach a net plant efficiency of 46%. For this power plant Alstom Power awarded the contract for the supply of the dry bottom ash handling systems to Magaldi Power, who contribute to the high efficiency rank of the plant with their innovative technologies.

THE SOLUTION

Magaldi Power’s scope of supply includes the design and supply of the dry bottom ash handling systems from the boilers’ throat up to small storage silos. The MAC® (Magaldi Ash Cooler) extractor, which is the core of the system, receives the hot bottom ash falling down from the boiler through a transition chute.
The ash is then extracted, cooled and transported to the crushing stage and the downstream Ecobelt® steel conveyor belt. The bottom ash is then conveyed to a buffer bin, before being humidified and discharged onto open trucks.
