THE CHALLENGE

Enel Produzione S.p.A. is a subsidiary of Enel S.p.A., the biggest energy group in Italy. Enel Produzione owns the Fusina power plant, that is the third largest coal based plant in Italy. Fusina TPP has 2x165 MW PCF boilers burning imported coal, 2x320 MW PCF boilers co-firing RDF (i.e. waste) with coal up to 5% of the thermal input and 1x16 MW gas turbine burning a mix of hydrogen and methane.
In the ‘90s, Magaldi Power carried out the wet-to-dry conversion of the bottom ash handling systems on the Units #1 thru 4 in order to avoid the enormous O&M burden of the existing sluice systems and to be in compliance with the stricter environmental legislation on waste water treatment.

 

THE CUSTOMER

Enel Produzione S.p.A. owns and operates thermal, hydroelectric, geothermal, and wind power generation plants in Italy. The company also provides fuel logistics and renewable energy-related services. Fusina is one of the most important power plants operated by Enel Produzione with a total installed power of 976 MW.
The Units #1 & 2 (160 MW each) were commissioned in the late ‘60s, while the Units #3 & 4 (320 MW each) in the early ‘70s. All units started the commercial operation burning mainly heavy oil, a cheap but very polluting fuel. Due to this reason and to preserve Venice’s lagoon where the plant is located, heavy oil was gradually replaced by coal and methane. Since 2006, refuse derived fuel (RDF) was steadily burned on the 320 MW class-boilers - up to 5% of the total thermal input.

 

THE SOLUTION

At the Fusina power plant the bottom ash handling system was originally wet on the Units #1 thru 4. It was made up of a water impounded hopper and a sluice system to convey wet bottom ash out of the boiler house. In the ‘80s, concerns about the pollution of Venice’s beautiful lagoon by industrial waste water effluents grew, and even stricter environmental legislation came into force. Although the waste water produced by the wet bottom ash sluice systems was handled in a treatment plant, it became difficult and costly to meet the effluent limitations.
Moreover, the O&M costs of the sluice systems were very high due to the use of sea water. This is why, at the beginning of the ‘90s, Magaldi Power became involved in the wet-to-dry conversion of the bottom ash handling systems.
